Put Your Carbon Footprint on the Cool Wirral Map

Do you know your carbon footprint?

Use the WWF Footprint Calculator on the Cool Wirral Climate Action Hub, where your answers to questions about household energy use, food consumption and travel habits will tell you approximately how much carbon your lifestyle generates.

You can then add a pin to a map to show your location and carbon footprint.

It would be great if our WEN newsletter subscribers could add their carbon footprint amounts to the map! Please help spread the word amongst your family and friends too.

The information will be analysed by Cool Wirral to help work out where the greatest sources of emissions are in each area and how to direct resources to best support communities to reduce them.

Calculate your carbon footprint and then add your pin to the map here:

https://haveyoursay.wirral.gov.uk/carbon-footprint

Relaunch of the Wirral Tree Warden Network

Wirral Council has recently relaunched the Wirral Tree Warden network, which is affiliated with The Tree Council's national Tree Warden scheme.

The council is now looking for new Tree Wardens to play an active role in the care of Wirral’s trees, hedgerows and woodlands. As a member of the network you will be able to attend events such as tree walks, workshops, tree plantings and a book club.

To join the Tree Warden network, please email [email protected] and you will receive a membership form and details of how you can get involved.

Communal Food Waste Composting Site Wanted

Compost Works has funding available to set up a new community composting facility in Wirral for local residents to use for their household food waste.

Training and support is available, as well as caddies to collect food waste at home.

Compost Works is looking for a suitable location in an area with terraced or apartment housing where people don't have space for home composting.

The compost produced in the communal facility can be used in community gardens, allotments and other local growing activities.

If you can suggest a location or would like more information about getting involved, contact Compost Works at [email protected]

Apply for Support from the Great British Insulation Scheme

You may be able to get free or cheaper insulation to reduce your home’s energy bills. If you’re eligible for support, your energy supplier will contact you to arrange an assessment of the property.

If you need to pay anything, you’ll find out after the assessment. You can decide not to go ahead if you do not agree with the assessment or costs.

Dock Branch Neighbourhood Consultation

Wirral Council is consulting on phase 2 of plans for the Dock Branch Neighbourhood in Birkenhead, which focuses on the area around the Dock Branch railway line that will be transformed into a new linear park.

A draft masterplan has been prepared following phase 1 of the consultation. Some of the environmental characteristics of the proposed development include:

  • Easy access to secure cycle storage, pedestrian and cycle priority at junctions, and high quality active travel infrastructure throughout.
  • Green, biodiverse, absorbent and edible landscapes.
  • Buildings constructed to passive design principles to keep them warm in winter and cool in summer, making them affordable to run.
  • Generation of onsite renewable energy through use of solar panels.
  • District heat network and electricity microgrid.
  • Communal organic waste converters and rain water harvesting.

You can read the Masterplan and have your say here:

Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Agree Bus Franchising System

Last week the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority approved plans to franchise bus services. Once the franchising system is in place the Combined Authority will have greater control over fares, routes and timetables, allowing for improvements in bus frequency, reliability and network coverage.

Franchising will be introduced in phases, with the first franchised buses starting to run in St Helens by late 2026. Wirral will be the second area in the roll out, with a fully franchised system across the whole of the Liverpool City Region by the end of 2028.

Read about the franchising decision here:
